App research, explained

App Keyword Research for Google Play

Good keyword research starts with the language people use for a problem. Use published search signals to compare relevant terms rather than chasing popularity alone.

Begin with the product’s purpose

List the tasks your app helps someone complete and the phrases they might use to find that help. Search those terms in the Keywords workspace and compare the available popularity, difficulty, competition, and opportunity signals. This section uses published Google Play keyword research. Its values are useful for comparing terms within the available dataset; they should not be read as an exact number of monthly searches or as a guarantee of ranking.

Balance relevance and competition

A popular term may attract broad attention while describing your app poorly. A narrower phrase can be more relevant to a specific audience, even when its reported popularity is lower. Examine the available competition and result signals with that relevance in mind. A missing value means the measure has not been published; it does not automatically mean low competition. Review the current store search results to understand the products a potential user would compare with yours.

Use research to improve clarity

Choose a small set of terms that accurately describe the app’s function, audience, and benefit. Use them naturally when planning the product and its listing, keeping the text useful to a person reading it. Repeating unrelated phrases does not make a clearer proposition. Keyword research is a Pro section when the owner enables it. Combine its published comparisons with product feedback and store checks, then revisit your choices as the product and the market change.
